Announcement and Call for Papers

The Republic of Korea, India, France, Japan, the Russian Federation, the People's Republic of China, Bulgaria, Cuba, the Czech Republic, Poland, and the Slovak Republic are currently contractors with the United Nations International Seabed Authority (ISA) and are registered with the ISA to explore for commercially exploitable mineral deposits in the deep seabed regions of the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Though constrained by difficult international precedents, daunting technical challenges, and dire economic forecasts, these groups continue making progress in securing the rights and technologies for the recovery of trillions of tons of deep seabed mineral resources.

Can exploitation of the deep-sea mineral deposits provide a more environmentally friendly extraction of base metals than existing on-land mines? How extensive are these deposits and are they in the reach of existing technology? Will these deposits provide a more sustainable and consistent supply of base metals for the future?

The 33^rd Annual Underwater Mining Institute (UMI) invites you to participate in a forum for serious discussion of these and other topics related to marine minerals on beautiful Jeju (also Cheju) Island, Korea. We are specifically seeking presentations in the following subject areas:

• Technological developments relevant to deep seabed exploration, mining and metallurgical processing;
• Environmental impact considerations for deep seabed mining;
• Political and regulatory considerations of importance for the prudent and efficient development of deep seabed mineral resources;
• Geological aspects of deep seabed minerals with relevance to prospecting and exploration; and
• Other noteworthy topics of timely interest to the development of marine minerals worldwide.

Highlighting our UMI will be Ambassador Satya Nandan, Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority in a banquet address to the Institute.

Call for Papers

Please submit an abstract with the following information to the Conference Coordinator by electronic mail or computer file (Word, WordPerfect, or ASCII)]. The deadline for abstract and biographical sketch submissions is May 30, 2003. The selection of presentations and notification of authors will be completed by June 30, 2003.

Conference Information

Our host, KORDI (Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute), has arranged for excellent lodging, meeting, and banquet accommodations, as well as an exciting two-day geotechnical and cultural tour.
