The recommended shuttle services is Shuttle Rio. Other “radio taxis” (usually blue, green or white taxis) are available. These may be a little costlier that regular yellow taxis, but, you pay a fixed rate no matter what time of day or how heavy the traffic may be. Be aware that traffic jams in Rio can be extremely heavy at times.
Please refer to the Shuttle and Taxi Service in Rio – Helpful Tips PDF for the latest helpful tips.
Rio de Janeiro is internationally known as the picture postcard of Brazil with the Corcovado looming 710 meters high—the home to Christ the Redeemer and a symbol of the city and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It has sprawling beaches, a bustling nightlife, breathtaking scenery, and world-class sports programs. Famous is Copacabana (location of this year’s UMI) and the cable car tour of Sugar Loaf Mountain.
Ouro Preto is the destination our UMI field tour where the Geological Survey of Brazil has made special arrangements for participants (40 max) to visit mines for black gold, iron, and gold. This will be a unique experience.
Porto de Galinhas is elected by destination magazines to be the best beach in Brazil for its sunny weather, warm sea, permanent breeze with easy access through a modern airport in Recife. This quaint yet sophisticated setting is a perfect backdrop for networking and roundtable discussions.
Weather: October will be spring time in Brazil, and it should be warm and comfortable in Rio, Ouro Preto, and Porto de Galinhas.
Currency: Only the bigger bank branches do money exchange usually with a commission. Better rates can be found at shops with the sign “Cambios.” ATM machines do not all return money for foreign cards. It is best to look for Visa/Mastercard logos on the terminals and international banks (HSBC, Citi, etc.) are the best starting points. ATM machines are closed between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am. ATMs from Banco do Brazil works with most foreign Visa cards.
Shopping: When shopping in street commerce, one should always bargain, which can lower prices considerably. Bargaining in stores and malls are usually impolite. Store managers in Rio often speak some English, and some may speak very little.
