About Bergen

Bergen is a beautiful city surrounded by majestic mountains and fjords on Norway’s western coast. The old Bryggen, a world heritage site on the wharf features colourful wooden houses once the center of the Hanseatic League’s trading empire. Bergen is also known as the “city of the seven mountains.” The Fløibanen funicular goes up one of its mountains, Fløyen, for panoramic views and hiking trails. The city is an international centre for aquaculture, shipping, offshore petroleum industry and subsea technology.

Visas

If you need one, apply for a visa to Norway at the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration website. Contact the Conference Coordinator for an invitation to the conference to submit with the visa application.

Arrival by Plane

The Flesland International Airport (BGO) is close to the city center and has daily connections to the major European airports (e.g. London, Amsterdam). There is an efficient airport bus direct to the city center and a taxi trip to the city will take approximately 30 minutes.

Arrival by Train

The Bergen railway between Oslo and Bergen is considered one of the world’s most scenic train rides. There are several daily departures between Oslo and Bergen. Learn more at www.nsb.no.

Travel to City Centre

From the airport to the city centre where the hotels are, you can either go by taxi, Airport BUS or the new light rail connection. Everything works perfectly.

Airport BUS
The Airport Express bus stops at the left hand side just outside the main terminal building. The bus drives an express route that only takes 20 minutes to the Bergen Bus Station (~200 m from Hotel Terminus and Hotel Zander K). In the city centre the bus also stops at Festplassen and Bryggen (~100 m Bergen Børs hotel), with departures every 10 minutes during the busiest parts of the day. Learn more at FLYBUSSEN.

Light Rail
The connection is relatively recent. It has many stops and may be more useful if you are staying outside the city centre.

Taxi
Takes about 18 minutes, so not that different from the BUS. The prices vary substantially with daytime-nighttime and weekend-week day. Prices should be roughly around 600 NOK ($74 US) each way.

Shuttle
With 3 or more persons, this may be more economical. It is fast, direct, and the stop is just in front of the airport entrance (it is a small airport). You can purchase tickets in a vending machine at the stop or directly in the bus (they accept cards, in Norway you can use cards everywhere, basically).
