There are many wonderful features in Sanya that will intrigue and enrich UMC participants and make UMC 2019 a unique and memorable experience for all.

Sanya boasts a 258-km long coastline, 19 bays and beaches, and over 20 meters of water visibility. Sanya has abundant tropical natural resources, enjoys a year-round balmy climate with clean air, sunshine, lush greenery, fresh seafood, and international high-end hotels and resorts. Sanya has a profound and rich tropical island culture—its marine culture, resort culture, Li and Miao culture form exciting contrasts within this tropical parade.

Sanya’s population is a unique mix of various ethnic groups. The Han Chinese make up about 67% of the population, and the rest is comprised of minority peoples, notably the Li, the Miao and the Hainan Hui. The Dan, whilst not officially recognized as a minority people, have a very distinct and interesting culture in Sanya.

Known in ancient times as Yazhou, literally “cliff state or prefecture,” Sanya boasts a history of more than 2000 years. Due to its remoteness from the political centers during the Imperial China eras, Sanya was sometimes called Tianya Haijiao, meaning “the end of the sky and ocean” or “the end of the earth.”

Visa

Option 1: Maximum Travel Flexibility

The best way to have maximum travel flexibility is to have participants apply for a Chinese Business Visa. If an official Letter of Invitation is needed, please email the Executive Director with the following details:

Option 2: Free Visa for Traveling Only Within Hainan Province

As of May 2018, visa-free entry to Hainan has been extended to citizens of 59 countries. The key requirement is that they must enter China in Hainan, which means either Sanya Phoenix (SYX) or Haikou Milan (HAK) airports need to be their first point in mainland China. These airports are exclusive to Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. UMC is working with a travel agency that has the license to apply for visas for UMC participants for free.

Airport Pick Up Shuttle

On Saturday 21 September between 10:00 and 20:00, and on Sunday 22 September between 10:00 and 17:00, two mid-size buses will shuttle between the SYX (Sanya Phoenix Airport) and JW Marriott Sanya Hotel, leaving from the airport every 45 minutes.

Volunteers wearing special UMC shirts and holding signs with the UMC logo will be waiting at all arrival gates during this time, directing arriving conference participants to the buses. They will also be available to help with arranging a taxi if needed.

Weather

Located at 18° 15′ N latitude, Sanya is about as far north of the Equator as to the islands of Hawaii. Sanya has a tropical wet and dry climate, featuring very warm weather all year around. Monsoonal influences are strong, with a relatively lengthy wet season and a pronounced dry season. The coolest month is January, at 21.6°C (70.9°F), while the hottest, unlike much of the rest of China, is June, at 28.8°C (83.8°F); the annual mean is 25.8°C (78.4°F). Water temperatures remain above 20°C (68°F) year-round.

Currency

The currency used in Mainland China is officially known as the Renminbi (RMB) also known as Chinese Yuan (CNY), or just Yuan (￥) and colloquially as Kuai (块). Chinese currency comes in notes of the following denominations: ￥1, ￥5, ￥10, ￥20, ￥50, ￥100. ￥1 is further broken down into “Jiao / 角”, 10 角 = 1 Yuan . These notes are much smaller in size and usually only come in 1 jiao or 5 jiao denominations. Currency of ￥1 or less either comes in note form or as coins.
