Other Activities and Fees

Spouses Day Trip Fee. This day visit to the town of Luebeck with its vast richness in history will include museum tours and time for shopping (in a nice old part of town that is for pedestrian use only). To be held on Monday, September 25th (concurrent with Technical Session I), this optional feature of the UMI is reserved for spouses and guests of UMI participants at a fee of 75 USD per person.

Banquet for Single-Day Registrants and Guests Fee. The banquet fee of 85 USD is only for single-day registrants or guests of the UMI. If you are registering under Regular or Student/Emeritus fees, the cost of the banquet is included. The UMI banquet will be held on the evening of September 26 onboard the “Freya,” a 100-year old paddle steamer as it sails within the Kiel Bay. We are honored to have Prof. Dr. Klaus Wallman of the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences (IFM-GEOMAR) present this year’s address, “The Future Ocean: An Initiative to Study its Changes, Risks, and Resources.”

Geological Field Tour. Led by Prof. Dr. Peter Halbach (emeritus) from Free University (Berlin), this 4-day (3-night) (September 27-30) optional feature of the UMI includes a visit to the Harz Mountains, which from the early Middle Ages were famous for its ore deposits. The Harz has extraordinary geologic versatility that link to hydrothermal and marine origins, making this destination an exciting “must see” for marine mining enthusiasts. All openings for the Field Tour have been filled and are no longer available for registration.

The cost of 485 USD (approximately 380 EUR) per person covers surface transportation from and returning to Kiel, lodging (based on Double accommodations) for 3 nights in a very nice hotel (includes breakfast), a special dinner on the last evening, and admission fees.

A minimum of 16 persons are needed to conduct the tour. Appropriate clothing and footwear in case of rain is encouraged. Guests are welcome to join the tour.
