2006 Conference: Field Tour

This Geological Field Tour is a 4-day (September 27, 7:30 AM to September 30, 4:00 PM) optional feature of the UMI that includes a visit to the Harz Mountains, which from the early Middle Ages were famous for its ore deposits. The Harz has extraordinary geologic versatility that link to hydrothermal and marine origins, making this destination an exciting “must see” for marine mining enthusiasts.

Prof. Dr. Peter Halbach from Free University (Berlin) will lead the Tour as follows:

Sep. 27: Depart Kiel (Steigenberger Hotel), travel to the Harz Mountains, and spend a half day visiting the old medieval town of Goslar (well preserved Old Town with a large market square, old buildings, narrow alley ways, and old beautiful restaurants). Check into the hotel, Der Achtermann.
Sep. 28: Visit the underground mining museum of the old Rammelsberg Mine that will provide fascinating insights into 850 years of industrial mining history.
Sep. 29: Climb by bus to the central part of the Harz Mountains and visit Clausthal-Zellerfeld and St. Andreasberg, areas of interesting geological outcrops to get an impression of the former mining activities there. In the evening, we will return to Goslar for a special dinner.
Sep. 30:Check out of the hotel, Der Achtermann. Return to Kiel by mid/late afternoon. We will make a stop over at the airport in Hamburg before reaching Kiel. For those who wish to depart from Goslar to other destinations, there is a railway station that can take you, for example, to Berlin via Braunschweig in about 4 hours or Hannover in 1 hour.

Image of the hotel, Der Achtermann. Hotel accommodations for all three nights have been arranged for at Der Achtermann, a 4-star hotel in a historical building located in the town of Goslar. Kindly remember that you will be sharing a room with another UMI participant.

The cost of 485 USD (approximately 380 EUR) per person covers surface transportation from and returning to Kiel, lodging (based on Double accommodations) for 3 nights in a very nice hotel (includes breakfast), a special dinner on the last evening, and admission fees.

Appropriate clothing and footwear in case of rain is encouraged. Guests are welcome to join the tour.
